Ruck March Performance Factors

 We are often asked about improving performance in ruck marching. Often these are men who desire to go to the Rangers or Special Forces. On the surface it seems simple. Just strap on a ruck and walk fast, right? But this is an activity that has many pitfalls that eat up energy and biomechanical efficiency. For example, if you wear the hip strap too low you seriously impede your ability to walk fast. So proper fit and wearing of the ruck is important. In fact, backpacking and ruck marching cannot be approached from a purely physical plane. The equipment you use and wear is easily 50% of the equation.

Recently, I was invited to take part in some recruit fire fighting training down at the Mississippi Fire Academy.  The instructors are veteran fire fighters and teachers who train every fire fighter in the state of Mississippi as well as many from around the nation.  This facility is only one of a few in the nation that has training programs for state recruits to advanced fire fighters and other Homeland Security hazardous materials training.

Kettlebell training promotes balance, flexibility, mobility, strength, rotational power, and “power endurance.” As the kettlebell grows in popularity so does the sport. Hardcore kettlebell enthusiasts and technicians take quickly to kettlebell sport aka girevoy sport (gs). I can tell you first hand this sport is physically and mentally grueling yet ridiculously addictive. If you havenʼt tried it I highly recommend it.
